Case Study
Project Overview
Nevada County Beekeepers is a local beekeeping association supporting both experienced beekeepers and people interested in learning how to keep bees. Their existing website needed a significant modernization to better educate visitors and make membership more accessible.
I redesigned the organization’s digital experience and transitioned their website from WordPress to Squarespace, creating a more modern and approachable user journey. Additionally, the transition allowed for less experienced admins to manage the backend more easily. The new site tells the story of the association, introduces prospective beekeepers to the benefits of membership, integrates membership shopping options, and provides educational resources for both new and experienced beekeepers.
I also implemented a spreadsheet feature that augments the organization’s educational mission beyond honeybees. An interactive native plant growing chart was designed to help members support local native bee species.
Before and After Redesign

The Challenge
The existing website was outdated and did not effectively communicate the value of the organization or provide a modern experience for prospective members.
For someone discovering the club for the first time, the site needed to answer several important questions:
- Who is Nevada County Beekeepers?
- What does the association offer its members?
- How can someone become a beekeeper?
- What educational resources are available?
- How does the community support local native bees?
Beyond membership, there was an opportunity to make the website a more valuable educational resource and connect beekeeping with the broader local ecosystem.
The goal wasn’t simply to give the association a new look. It was to create a website that could educate, welcome, connect, and convert.
Strategy
- Website Modernization & Platform Migration
- WordPress to Squarespace: Migrated the association’s website to Squarespace, creating a more modern platform and simplifying ongoing website management.
- Modern Visual Experience: Redesigned the site to better reflect the organization’s community-focused mission and make the experience more approachable to visitors who may be completely new to beekeeping.
- Content Strategy: Reorganized existing information so visitors could more easily understand the club, its purpose, resources, and opportunities for participation.
- Designing the New Beekeeper Journey
- Welcoming New Beekeepers: Created clearer pathways for people who are curious about beekeeping but may not know where to start.
- Membership Conversion: Integrated membership shopping options into the website, reducing friction between learning about the club and joining.
- Community Connection: Designed the user experience to position the association as a resource and community for beekeepers.
- Educational Resource Development
- Beyond Membership: Expanded the role of the website by incorporating educational content designed to provide value to visitors and members.
- Local Ecosystem Focus: Identified an opportunity to connect the organization’s beekeeping mission with the protection and support of native bee species.
- Native Planting Chart
- Integrated Spreadsheet: Built the resource around an integrated sheet that members can contribute to, allowing the information to grow as a community resource rather than remain a static webpage.
Results
📈 A dated website was transformed into a modern Squarespace experience designed around the needs of both prospective and existing members.
📈 The new user journey makes the organization easier to understand, guiding visitors from discovering the club to learning about beekeeping and exploring membership. Educational content became a more prominent part of the website experience.
📈 Membership shopping was integrated into the website, creating a clearer path from interest to joining.
📈 A new native plant planting chart expanded the site’s educational value, helping members identify opportunities to support local native bee species with a dynamic integration.
Key Takeaways
- Modernization Should Solve Problems, Not Just Update Aesthetics: The website redesign focused on improving how people discover, understand, and interact with the organization.
- Designing for New Audiences Expands Membership Opportunities: A welcoming user journey can make an established association feel more accessible to people who are interested but don’t yet consider themselves part of the community.
- Education Creates Value Beyond Conversion: By making educational resources a central part of the website, the organization can provide value to visitors even as they become established association members.
- Think Beyond the Organization’s Immediate Mission: The native planting feature expanded the conversation from honeybees to the broader pollinator ecosystem, creating a resource that supports the association’s educational mission while serving the local environment.
